I visited this article as an adult survivor of child abuse (physical, mental, and sexual) hoping to see something positive, but instead seeing an oft-repeated MYTH that we are more likely to become abusers ourselves. In fact, the opposite is true. While it is true that child abusers are more likely to abuse children, it is NOT true that adults who were abused as children are more likely than others to become abusers. It's a grossly unfair characteristic of us, and it continues to perpetuate a stereotype and victimize those of us who have already been victimized again and again and again. If you cannot support us, at least leave us to heal in peace. http://www.centrefortherapy.ca/Mythsofabuse In future, I (and millions like me) would appreciate more sensitivity and less judgment.

Wow! What an informative and fascinating article! The part about aging faster chromosomally is really interesting. It makes sense. I wonder too about the effects of other types of abuse, verbal, neglectful behavior, and passing along neuroses. Thanks for writing extensively, with good detail about a tough topic.

Thank you for taking the time to write this article and educate us all. As parents we like to think we can control the things that will affect our children's health and happiness, but the health of the society they live in also influences their lives. The healthier we can make our society the better our own children's lives will be.
