I think we have to be extremely supportive of those individuals. They have had a huge deviation off their birthing plan and now are likely in intense pain and struggling with a decision for how to manage it. Being non-judgemental and providing non-biased information is essential. I would always recommend that my patients control their pain by the method of their choice and be well informed. If they choice medications, use as small of a dose as possible to control and attempt to utilize other methods to add to pain control therapy. Understanding and being supportive to any new Mother is essential.

As a medical professional, I find this article interesting. It has been written and researched well. I would encourage every Mother to make choices based on facts and personal preference. I, as a Mother, tried non-pharmacologic methods to control my pain (imagery, massage, reflexology, music and even walks) but found that my pain was best controlled via medication during the first week post partum. We should always provide information to Mothers without bias and applaud their decisions, for they have been made by the individual.
